Dr. Abdelqader Elshabani – Dubai Municipality’s Transportation Planning Specialist
Dubai Municipality’s Transportation Planning Specialist, Dr. Abdelqader Elshabani, presented Dubai’s vision and plans regarding the Dubai Metro Project with a budget of 14 billion Dirhams. The metro system will be the longest state of the art fully automated system in the world.
Speaking to delegates at the event, Elshabani said: ‘Dubai’s quality of life for subsequent generations depends on decisions being made now. The provision of a fast, efficient, non-polluting, integrated rapid transit network throughout the City will provide a cleaner environment and greater mobility. Dubai Metro will support Dubai’s growth and on-going success.’
Dubai Municipality plans to take on the City’s growing traffic congestion and transportation problems by increasing the stake of the public sector in the transportation market. There are currently some 465,000 registered cars on the streets and 5,000 taxis that belong to private sector companies. As far as public sector transportation services, there are 57 bus routes that carry out 90 million passenger trips per year and growing at 20% annually. At the Dubai Creek, Abras (water taxis) are conducting 15 million trips per year. Dubai’s integrated transportation solution targets an increase of public transport market share from 4.7% to over 17% over the next 15 years.
‘Dubai Municipality has a tremendous challenge to cope with over the next 15 years,’ continued Elshabani. ‘The road network in Dubai has grown from 200 kilometers in 1964 to 9,100 kilometers in 2004, and average daily trips will grow from 3.1 million per day today to 13.1 million in 2020. With this in mind, we can see how important the Dubai Metro will become.’
The metro system will be divided between two lines, Red and Green, and built in two phases. In the year 2020, the Red line will have a capacity of 16,792 passengers per hour per direction (PPHPD) while the Green 10,688 PPHPD, with the ultimate aim to raising these figures to 27,000 and 18,000 respectively.
Adel Lootah, Executive Director of Dubai Property Group, said: ‘Dubai Property Group members are leading real estate players and have a role to play in the development of Dubai’s infrastructure. Our purpose here is to act as a mediator between the private and the public sector and to raise issues of concern and mutual benefit. On behalf of DPG members I would like to take this opportunity to commend the hard work and intensive planning that is going into the Dubai Metro System, which when completed, will be another milestone in Dubai’s history.’
