    Police conduct operation ‘Iron Fist’ in Ajman

    A mega force of 1,500 federal and police officials cordoned off an industrial area Thursday on the hunt for illegal workers, says Brigadier Ali Alwan, Chief of Ajman Police.

    Operation Iron Fist – a joint operation between Ministry of Interior and Ajman government – was launched to crack down on illegal workers.

    Authorities focussed on a 60-square metre area within the industrial zone and the exercise was expected to wrap up around 5 p.m.

    “We are cleaning up the area with help from the Air Wing to basically weed out the infiltrators,” Ali Alwan told XPRESS.

    “This is a very big Ministry of Interior operation.”

    Ali Alwan did not disclose how many illegal workers were arrested but said police would issue a statement with further details.

    According to a source close to the Ajman government, the crackdown was spawned by incidents of unrest by illegal workers in the last 10 days, XPRESS was told.

    “The area has become dangerous and it’s good that this crackdown is happening now,” he said. “Officials stated that a full-scale inspection is going to happen today and clear away any law breakers.”

    According to the source, on Feb. 16 illegal workers confined immigration inspectors and assaulted them at an unidentified warehouse in the industrial area.

    A few days later, illegal workers once again lashed out, this time at a police patrol and assaulted the officers.

    Meanwhile, travellers into the city from Dubai and Sharjah were allowed into the emirate but were barred entry to the Ajman Industrial Area which was closed since 9am.
    Areas beyond Mecca supermarket were sealed off.
