DUBAI- A day after a furious blaze reduced the Naif Souq to ashes, another fire has been reported in Al Quoz, the scene of a major blaze last week.
According to eyewitnesses a thick plume of smoke was seen emanating from a warehouse near the third interchange leading to Al Quoz. Police and fire fighting officials have reached the spot and they are attempting to get the blaze under control. According to latest reports the warehouse has been completely gutted.
Civil Defense officials have confirmed the fire. While they refused to divulge any more saying that the nature and the cause of the fire had still to be ascertained, they have confirmed that there are no casualties. According to sources, however, two people have been taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the fire. Police helicopters were also pressed into service as civic officials tried to put the latest nightmare in the proper perspective.
According to an eyewitness who reported the blaze, police cars had cordoned off the area. “I was in the bus when I saw the fire. We had ground to a halt as we saw flames emanating from the warehouse. It seemed like a huge fire and there was a lot of smoke.”
Al Quoz Industrial estate is home to thousands of warehouses that store everything from vehicles and garments to toys and construction material. It has often been a point of bother with authorities and is the scene of at least one major blaze every year. However, this time around two fires have been reported in a span of a week raising concerns about the implementation of firefighting and other safety standards within the establishments. Last week’s fire that gutted 83 warehouses and left eight dead in Al Quoz was ascribed to illegal storage of firecrackers.
