The order Crocodilia is today well-represented by the various types of alligator and crocodile which inhabit the Earth. Yet there were many fossil members of the four sub-orders (Protosuchia, Mesosuchia, Sebecosuchia and Eusuchia) which inhabited the Earth as early as the Jurassic period (208-144 million years ago) and which are long since extinct. Only members of the sub-orders Sebecosuchia and Eusuchia were around during the Miocene epoch, but it is not absolutely certain which type was present at Jebel Barakah, although it may have resembled the gavial (sub-order Eusuchia, family Gavialidae). The sub-orders of the order Crocodilia have been distinguished mainly on the basis of differences in the shape of the skull, the number of teeth, etc.
